Similar Work to POWOW

I've been talking about BODY OUT as opposed to Head Down performance, especially in Bel Canto singing and Opera.  This evening I opened my emails and there was one from Artsadmin E-Digest Issue 487 with details of a workshop in Body Opera.  This is the link to the explanatory video http://vimeo.com/29036921?utm_source=Artsadmin+List&utm_campaign=6d569d8269-Artsadmin+E-digest+Issue+487&utm_medium=email.

This is exciting because someone else has seen the gap that I've seen and has been working with trained Opera singers.  I'm excited because my POWOW project is moving towards the stage of music improvisation and for the group purpose I'm not concerned with whether or not the participants are Bel Canto trained.  For my own enquiry, naturally I am interested.

I'm not sure if I'd like to take part in these workshops.  I find there's something of a mismatch between who I am, how I present, what I'm interested in my class background, my age, my training and education and the world of conventionally trained opera singers.  Of course it's a massive generalisation but usually they are talented younger people who have gone through their musical education, conservatoires etc. and emerge with a career in front of them.  I'm uncertain of what my path is.

I think I'll try and have a conversation with Patrick Eakin Young and see what comes of it.  In the meantime, I am greatly encouraged to go forward with the POWOW projects and hope all the workshop participants are as excited as I am that we are on our own path to creating new Opera.

  1. It's an exciting discovery to find someone else doing similiar work to yours. After watching the video they all looked very stiff and more worried about the sound they produced than feeling how the movement affected their voice and created the sound..if that makes sense! I agree the pictures that are the most interesting for me are the ones where you look very in the moment rather than thinking about the process. Julia

  2. Thanks for the feedback Julia. I need to keep the work happening so that it becomes easier for us all just to get into the mode more easily and quickly. We're doing ok at it. It's hard to tell from still photographs but we've lots of lovely movers amongst us! Kim x
