What Am I Documenting?
I've been resting for a few days, potting up some young olive trees, a lemon tree, tidying up the greenhouse, pleasurable things that don't require to much analysis (!) but it's time I got on with organizing the documenting of my contextual enquiry project.
There are two aspects or two projects in fact. One is my own artistic enquiry into whether I can create new operatic material through authentic movement, improvised theatre and various vocal production techniques to which I append Bel Canto singing of something, text or vowel or utterance. Another is the bringing together of older women to explore theatre improvisation and vocal production and the creation of materials of interest and relevance to ourselves. I know I must document the first aspect. However, the second aspect is something I'm pulled to giving serious thought to.
I suppose if the UK or anywhere else for that matter were awash with arts performance companies, plays, operas, t.v. shows, films, bands that mirrored the lives of older women as they are today and not in some outdated stereotypical blandness as they do then the workshops wouldn't even be necessary. If plentiful opportunities for older women to not only continue a career in performance but to begin such a career were in existence I could just focus on my own personal artistic enquiry. But currently it's not an even playing field for older women.
The first year UCF students start soon and the returning students don't begin until the workshops are already under way. I'll be asking FXU and Platform to publicize my request for help in documenting the workshops but if anyone reading knows of someone who would do a sensitive and creative record of our work, could you put them in touch with me?
Workshops in theatre improvisation and vocal production for older women wanting to discover or develop their practice. The workshops are managed by an older woman music and theatre graduate who is developing a new methodology in devising and performing sung dramatic material in company with and about contemporary older women.
