One of the life-changing treats during my 2nd year at University College Falmouth (incorporating Dartington College of Arts) was being able to be led by Pip in a module entitled Vocal Production. I've studied classical singing since 2004 and have taken great pleasure and interest in learning how the voice works for the purposes of singing but this module encourages safe exploration of vocal expression in its widest sense from sound production, spoken word and sung material. Pip presented the module in a safe and supported way. The exercises, games, tools, atmosphere, Zumba, relaxation techniques, made the whole experienced a joy. I certainly found I had a more liberated yet connected voice with wider range and tonal qualities. The improvisation tools echoed those of the theatre improvisation module. I'm a larger, relatively unfit older woman but I found myself playful and energetic.
I was so excited about the prospect of devising new material for an Opera about the lives of older women that I asked Pip if she would be prepared to lead some workshops for me and she said yes.
