More About Who and What POWOW is About or Thereabouts

WHO OR WHAT IS POWOW?
POWOW is me until such time as there is a group.  So for a while POWOW is my personal blog which is introducing a new creative opportunity and working methodology to support developing artistic practices. So far my research on this indicates this approach to creating operatic narrative and musical content is new.  If anyone knows of any operatic performance companies or performance that utilize this approach, I'd really like to hear about that.  So far the Project is just me but I envisage groups of 8 women participating over 10 workshops.  The invitation is there for women who already have experience of singing or theatre or some kind of performance to try a workshop and if they like it attend others.  Women have expressed an interest and have and will donate their advice and time to help the project come into being.

OLDER WOMEN ARE SO FLIPPIN MARVELLOUS!!!!!
Secondly the blog is by an older woman who is exploring the issues and interests of older women, giving them an opportunity to create work of their own which is entirely shaped by their unique insights and life experiences.  Older women are disappearing from films and t.v. or are given roles which do not convey the richness, diversity and interest of their lives or demonstrate the wide range of their skills.  Basically, hardly anyone is writing good material for older women to perform.  In Opera, because the voice matures later in life, women in their 30s or 40s are accustomed to perform pieces conveying characters who are young women.  The POWOW project gives women all the power and all the responsibility and all the possibility.

gOING aGaInst the Conditioning - BEING SELFISH!
In order to give myself as an artist the best possible opportunity to develop over the shortest amount of time, it seems to me right to trust professional people to deliver the workshops.  The skill and experience needed to deliver these workshops can't be underestimated.  There may be older women performer/educators who are suitably skilled and experienced and who would donate their time to lead the workshops.  I haven't heard of those women - yet.  My choice is to pay the workshop leaders the professional and appropriate rate for their work.

I could deliver some of the workshops myself and, if it comes to it, I will do so but leading a workshop is quite a different thing to having the luxury of participating as one of the cohort, as simply a developing practitioner, an experimenter.  That is the role I prefer for myself on this occasion.

ONLY THE BEST FOR OLDER WOMEN.
Soundproof spaces need to be the right size, provide good and appropriate acoustics, privacy, accessibility, safety and security, clean smooth floor surf aces, car parking and are within reach of a railway station.  Just yesterday I found out I won't have to pay for the studio space at the Performance Centre and so the the hire costs of £2,500.00 can immediately be struck off the budget.  Until I had the confirmation that the performance space was free, I had to budget for paying it.  In fact, I am hopeful that another interested party might donate some workshop space and this, if it were to happen, some workshops would be based in Truro.

There's so much more to say.  I've altered the blog settings so it might be easier for people to leave comments now.

All best wishes

Kim
