Hello - and what's it all about?

Hi - thanks for taking a look at this POWOW blog.

Here's a form of words I put together to try to be succinct.  Over the next few months I'll blogging the putting together of this project.   I hope to have interviews, photos, videos, highs and lows to add here.  It's quite straightforward really.

University College Falmouth incorporating Dartington College of Arts Music and Theatre undergraduate and student of bel canto, 55 year old Kim Gough, is hosting a series of 10 workshops based in Cornwall in improvised theatre and vocal production led by professional performer/educators.  As part of her continuing studies Kim is engaging in an innovative and exciting project exploring the practice of devising and performing dramatic sung material through improvised music and theatre workshops and invites interested older women singers or theatre performers to join her.  If you would like to know more about this intriguing way of creating and/or performing opera or would like to engage with the work, please contact her at itsPOWOW@gmail.com.

That's Stage 1.  The Workshops.  There's a further two stages.   Stage 2.  Collaboration.  I'd like to get together with other older women to create/devise material which will form a new opera.  The main characters will be older women.  Older women will perform it.  It's content will be of interest to today's older women.   Stage 3 is to perform material produced in stages 1 and 2.

There.  Have I made that as clear as mud??

  1. I would like to be involved in this project. It sounds interesting. I am not an opera singer but have singing lessons and passed my Grade 5 Musical Theatre last year with distinction. I do lots of local theatre and would like to increase my theatrical experiences.
I am 44 so don't know if you class that as old enough to be an older woman! I don't feel old but I also know I'm no longer a teenager!

  2. Hi Michelle, thanks for being in touch. I'm so pleased that you're interested.

I can't define the age when a woman is older. I think most of the participants will be 40 years of age or older. The workshops will be in Cornwall. I'll keep you posted on here with more information about when and where and how much it will cost. At the moment the professionally led workshops will be approximately 4 hours long and will cost £15 per workshop to participants.

    Keep in touch.

    With best wishes. kx

  3. Michelle. If you're still interested in taking part in the project, you will need to fill in a participant form which comes with an explanation of the workshops and return it to me by Friday 25th August. I can email a form to you if you give me your email address.

    Best wishes, Kim.
